Tesla Audits Chinese Suppliers to Accelerate Optimus Mass Production

Tesla's humanoid robot team initiated supply chain audits in China's Yangtze River Delta region beginning last week, according to reports from 21 September 2026. The inspections target established suppliers including Tuopu Group, Sanhua Intelligent Controls, and Joyson Electronics, which currently supply core components to Tesla's automotive business. These companies had secured orders for Tesla's humanoid robot prior to the audits, with order quantities varying by supplier.

Audit activities will assess production line quality and regulatory compliance, with actual production expected to commence following successful inspections. The audit scope extends beyond Ningbo in Zhejiang province to include supply chain partners in Hangzhou, Shanghai, and other Yangtze River Delta locations, primarily existing Tesla automotive suppliers.

The model designated for mass production represents third-generation Optimus, Tesla's first design intended for high-volume manufacturing. Upgrades include refined dexterous hand mechanisms and joint actuators, with initial deployment targeted at industrial applications including material handling and basic assembly line support in factory environments.

Tesla has converted its former Model S and Model X production line at the Fremont facility into a dedicated Optimus manufacturing line with planned annual capacity of 1 million units. A second robot production line is under preparation at the Texas Gigafactory, designed for long-term annual capacity of 10 million units, with production anticipated to commence around summer 2027.
