BYD Begins Mass Production of Next-Generation 4D Radar Chip
BYD Semiconductor has commenced mass production of its next-generation 4D millimeter-wave radar chip, advancing the automaker's vertical integration strategy for autonomous driving systems. The chip supports driving levels 2 through 4 and delivers detection ranges exceeding 400 meters.
BYD Semiconductor announced on 2 September 2026 the commencement of mass production for its in-house developed 4D millimeter-wave radar chip. The solution employs a satellite architecture centered on BYD's Xuanji A3 smart-driving chip, fully developed internally by the manufacturer.
The new chip addresses limitations inherent in conventional millimeter-wave radar systems, which lack elevation-angle data and struggle with complex urban driving conditions. The device was engineered on a 28-nanometer automotive-grade process and incorporates a high-speed MIPI CSI-2 interface alongside compatibility with mainstream serializer/deserializer standards.
The chip delivers stable detection at distances exceeding 400 meters, horizontal angular resolution of 0.8 degrees, and parking-grade range resolution of 0.05 meters. The single-chip solution integrates 8 transmit channels and 8 receive channels, meeting ISO 26262 ASIL B functional-safety standards and AEC-Q100 automotive reliability requirements. Its operating junction-temperature range spans minus 40 to 150 degrees Celsius, representing the widest specification in the industry according to BYD Semiconductor.
Applications utilizing this chip support Level 2 through Level 4 autonomous driving functions, including highway navigation assistance, urban autonomous driving, automated parking and blind-spot monitoring. The integration with Xuanji A3 has been completed and validated to meet tier-one module supplier detection-performance specifications.
