BYD Introduces SHARK: Breakthrough Super Hybrid Technology for European Pickup Market
BYD has introduced the SHARK, its first pickup truck, equipped with breakthrough Super Hybrid DMO technology. The vehicle combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors for a combined system output of 436PS and 650Nm of torque. A 32.2kWh Blade Battery delivers 90km of pure-electric range and WLTP fuel consumption of 3.5L/100km.
The SHARK represents a breakthrough for the European pickup market by applying Super Hybrid DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) technology, which has already proven successful in BYD's DM-i models. The vehicle pairs a front electric motor producing 231PS and 310Nm with a rear unit delivering 204PS and 340Nm, achieving combined maximum system output of 436PS and 650Nm. The ladder-frame chassis and double-wishbone suspension at both ends enable superior rough-terrain capability, with acceleration from standstill to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds.
The 32.2kWh Blade Battery represents the largest capacity in the European plug-in hybrid pickup segment—nearly treble that of its only existing competitor. Total range on a full charge and full tank reaches 675km, with WLTP weighted fuel consumption of just 3.5L/100km, dropping to 9.6L/100km even at lowest battery state of charge. Full recharging from 15% via an 11kW three-phase AC charger requires just over three hours, whilst standard 55kW DC charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in 21 minutes.
The five-seat double-cab interior features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch infotainment screen—the segment's largest. A completely flat rear floor provides foot space for three rear passengers with approximately 90cm of legroom and a car-like 27° rear seat-back angle, delivering comfort more aligned with full-sized family SUVs than conventional pickups. Standard features include an intelligent all-wheel drive system managing power delivery across four terrain types: sand, mud, snow and gravel, along with Hill Descent Control and a 700mm wading depth.
The SHARK's design draws inspiration from shark anatomy through an aggressive front treatment with headlights positioned at the bonnet edge and extending to either side of a full-width line, paired with a prominent grille and lower bumper replicating the predator's powerful jaws. Side muscular curvature echoes the shark's upper body, whilst 18-inch wheels and protective plastic cladding on lower bodywork enhance both visual dynamism and practicality. A full-width lightbar stretches across the tailgate, with tail-lights bracketing inwards to convey strength and protection.
